Food Safety/Supply Chain Integrity

FEMA provides guidance to its membership on food ingredient safety issues and ensures that the flavor industry perspective is considered and reflected in legislative and regulatory proposals put forward to address food safety concerns.

While flavors normally comprise only a small part of food, events that lead to a perceived health or safety threat to the food chain may lead to questions regarding the safety and security of the flavor supply chain as well. Many of these issues have already achieved high public visibility and are of significant concern in general because not only can this “negative publicity” lead to a loss of trust in existing governmental operational controls but these occurrences challenge the flavor industry to provide assurance that the ingredients and flavors they supply are safe “under their conditions of intended use.” The focus of the flavor industry is to take steps to protect its raw materials from intentional or unintentional adulteration.

In 2009, FEMA developed a supply chain integrity program to coordinate the communication process, assist in the development of a risk assessment process for certain ingredients, and help member companies implement strategies to prevent recurrences.
