Commonly Used Acronyms

In the flavor industry, acronyms are often used in place of full regulatory names and agencies, as well as for other industry associations.  FEMA has developed a list of those acronyms which we use most frequently for the benefit of the membership.

FEMA GRAS™ Database

FEMA GRAS™ Publications

A critical part of the FEMA GRAS™ assessment program is the publication of the Expert Panel's decisions.  Since 1965, lists of flavoring substances that the Expert Panel has determined to be GRAS have been published in a series of publications in the journal Food Technology.

Several publications are available which describe the FEMA GRAS™  program and the history and operations of the Panel.

Safety Assessments

As part of the GRAS reaffirmation program, the key scientific data upon which the GRAS decisions are based on  is published in the peer-reviewed safety assessments. The assessments have been organized according to chemical group and contain an analysis of food and flavor exposure data, data on absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, molecular reactions with proteins and DNA, and reports of toxicology, carcinogenicity, and genotoxicity studies for groups of structurally related flavoring substances.
