Allison Brown, a Ph.D. candidate at the Pennsylvania State University, has been awarded the Dr. Richard L. Hall Scholarship in Flavor Science by Feeding Tomorrow, the foundation of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), on behalf of the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association.

Ms. Brown received the award at the IFT Annual Meeting held in New Orleans June 2-5, 2019, for her research characterizing the flavor of different Theobroma Cacao cultivars using sensory and chemical analysis. She will pursue a career as a coca and chocolate scientist, working at an international level, within government or industry.

“FEMA is pleased to support the next generation of scientists through our partnership with IFT’s Feeding Tomorrow foundation and the Dr. Richard L. Hall Scholarship in Flavor Science program,” FEMA Executive Director Jerry Bowman said. “Innovative contributions to food science from scientists such as Allison have incredible potential to positively impact the flavor industry for years to come.”

The Hall Scholarship was created to honor graduate students who devote their work to the use of sound science reflected by the work of Dr. Richard L. Hall, a prolific scientist who served as president of both FEMA and IFT.  The scholarship demonstrates the shared dedication of each organization to excellence and safety in food science.
